Freiburg is a major university city lying in southwest Germany's Black Forest. It is a well-known tourist site since the natives are fluent in English and the city blessed with plenty of sunshine is surrounded by a breath-taking aura. The surrounding forest with the Schlossberg hill also makes it an ideal hiking destination. The student life ensures the city's urban flair with bustling shopping centres and pub-lined streets. It is associated with the University of Freiburg and serves as a research and teaching tool. Despite suffering damage as a result of the World War II air raids on Freiburg, the garden stands better than ever with over 8,000 species. It involves the research of Black Forest fossil flora of the Carboniferous period and the essential morphology and biomechanics of live and fossil plants. The botanical garden's collections contain plants from alpine regions, dunes, heaths, marshes and bogs. It also holds four massive exhibition greenhouses covering about 900 m2 that contain tropical plants, ferns, cacti and succulents.
