Kiel is a city made up of grand ports with reflections of the bustling life and remarkable lights floating over waters of the Baltic sea that makes it not only an important trading hub but also an epitome of modernism. It is the ideal location for student life to thrive with its urban attractions and fast moving lifestyle. Kiel is a vital part of the country since it is a main German naval base. You can always find massive ferries crowding up the waters and the summers are occupied with lazy strolls beside the harbour. Kiel is also famous for its annual sailing festival, “Kieler Woche" which is a must-attend with its lively concerts and several artistic performances.

The city follows a typical Brick Gothic architectural style, with buildings dating back to the 19th century. You can find a whole street dedicated to those; Dänische strasse, lying in the heart of Kiel.

If you are passionate about gardening, you definitely need to visit University of Kiel, which is home to a remarkable botanical garden, covering about 2.5 hectares of land. It is also known as the Old Botanical Garden on the Fjord. It is open daily without charge.

The splendid gardens display:

• Over 280 species of diverse herbaceous flora.
• A vast collection of trees including one of the largest ginkgo trees in Schleswig-Holstein.
• Two species of Metasequoia glyptostroboides that are known to be the oldest of their kind on the European mainland (planted around 1948).
• The specimens of Juniperus rigida, Taxodium distichum, Amur cork, and Sequoia sempervirens.
• The garden also contains two ponds, lawn areas, and perennial flower beds.

It’s best to visit the city during the summers for its cool breezy aura makes up for one good trip.
