Aomori Fiori Fiorista

Aomori-shi celebrates flowers from early spring, well into the summer, with many different activities, each honouring a special flower.

First Comes the Cherry Blossoms

The cherry blossoms begin to flower late in April and continue into early May. Only a few weeks of flowers brings many Japanese spring celebrations. Japan is famous for the cherry blossoms themselves and for their festivals celebrating the small pink blooms.

After the Cherries come Apple Blossoms

Hirosaki Apple Park is home to the Apple Flower Festival in Aomori-shi. Great entertainment is available for young and old, such as mini train rides, apple peeling competitions for parents and their children, quizzes about apples, blossom pressing, yummy apple doughnuts are available and live concerts play for all.

The Apples Finish which Brings the Azaleas

There are about 500 azalea bushes that bloom each May on a small hill at the Tennou Shrine in Aomori-shi. The azaleas are lit up at night, which is quite a spectacle, making them just as beautiful after dark as they are in the day time.

The Owani Onsen Azalea Festival is held in the Chausuyama Park. A much wider variety are here, with more than 20 different kinds of azalea flowers, and more than 15,000 individual blooms.

After Azaleas it Brings the Butter Yellow Canola Flower Festival

By the middle of May the canola flowers have burst forth with their brightest yellow blooms. With 158 hectares (almost 400 acres) of bright yellow flowers it is certainly something to celebrate. The “Yokohama Nanohana Marathon” is an event where contestants run through the fields, with a Canola Maze to try your wits.

All through the spring and summer months you can be sure there is something to celebrate with the flowers in Aomori-shi.
