The seaside town of Otaruin Hokkaido is known for its tasty seafood and also a lovely canal on which you can stroll. The local museum is an interesting place to explore, and the little glass-made handicrafts for which this area is famous make for lovely souvenirs to take back home to those who were not fortunate enough to visit. Those who would like to see flowers in Otaru have plenty of choice, both in the city and in the wider area. The ONZE Harukayama in Otaru is a great place to start. In the colder weather the slopes of the hills surrounding Otaru are covered in snow, but as that melts the green shoots of spring come through and by summer the whole area is covered in beautiful lilies and other gorgeous flowers. Further afield, but also in Hokkaido province, is the Zerubu Hill. Up here, lavender fields bloom far and wide and are mixed with a wide array of other colourful flowers. Finally, about a 40 minute drive from Otaru is the TakinoSuzuran Hillside National Park. Here, flower lovers will be delighted with its’ fabulous tulips and cosmos at various points during the year, stretching as far as the eye can see.
